  • Coastal Scientist/Engineer (Fredericton, NB / Halifax, NS)

    The successful candidate will be based out of either of our Fredericton, New Brunswick or Halifax, Nova Scotia office and will have the following qualifications:

    Educational & Experience Requirements:

    • Minimum of a bachelors degree with a focus on coastal/ocean science or engineering, oceanography, or related field. Masters degree preferred.
    • 5-10 years of experience.
    • Exceptional knowledge in various coastal modelling. High level of proficiency using MIKE 21 software and similar modelling tools.
    • Exceptional knowledge in coastal morphological process and modeling. This includes the modelling of waves, currents, sediment transport, and shoreline change.
    • Good knowledge in shoreline protection design, such as breakwater, jetties, and revetment.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and a passion for creating detailed and accurate reports and presentations.

    Main Duties:

    • Manage, process, and analyze large geospatial datasets.
    • Perform coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping with respect to both present day and future conditions.
    • Conduct small- and large-scale climate change vulnerability assessments related to coastal hazards for a wide array of clients from both public and private sectors. Become familiar with hydrotechnical modelling programs for river hydrology and hydraulics, such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS and PCSWMM, as well as support the water resources group with modelling assignments. Produce written documentation via reports and memos of study methodology and results, and provide recommendations based on findings. Communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to increase risk awareness and support resilience planning through written, verbal and visual means.
    • Provide technical support to staff locally and across the region.
    • Provide internal training sessions for GEMTEC staff and external presentations for prospective employees and clients.

    • Working with the Laboratory Manager and Field Supervisor to coordinate and manage deliverables to ensure that project schedules and budgets are achieved;

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • At minimum a degree in a Civil or Materials Engineering discipline with a heavy focus on construction materials (concrete, asphalt pavement, aggregates).
    • 2 to 5 years of experience with laboratory testing and field inspections.
    • A demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast paced, multidisciplinary environment.
    • Experience related to asphalt pavement mix design, pavement condition assessment, and laboratory testing of physical and volumetric properties of asphalt would be a strong asset.
    • Possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational abilities, and the capability to manage and prioritize several assignments at one time with a view to delivery of a quality product on time and on budget.
    • Registered P. Eng. or ability to become registered with Professional Engineers Ontario.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Project management duties, including client communications, resource management, development and monitoring of project scope, cost estimates/budgets and schedules;

    • Consult with municipal, provincial and federal governments to determine submission requirements for permitting and approvals;

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Completion of a relevant university degree(s) in hydrogeology, engineering, or geology (advanced/graduate level degrees considered an asset);
    • Registered, or eligible to register, as either a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist in New Brunswick;
    • Possess a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in engineering/environmental consulting;
    • Thorough understanding of applicable Provincial and Federal regulations;
    • Advanced groundwater data analysis, and flow and transport modelling experience using industry standard software;
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, multidisciplinary environment where teamwork and collaboration are paramount;

    Educational Requirements:

    • Training in Civil 3D/AutoCAD and GIS is required
