Innovative Concrete Bridge Deck Assessment Techniques

To assess the condition of a deteriorating bridge deck, GEMTEC completed both a ground-penetrating radar survey and a concrete core extraction and testing program. By combining these technologies, GEMTEC created a GPS-referenced, high-precision map of the areas of the bridge deck experiencing corrosion and needing rehabilitation.

Project highlights include:

• Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey of bridge deck and development of a GPS-referenced map of signal attenuation values
• Targeted concrete core extraction and testing program using the map of GPR data
• Development of rehabilitation recommendations using the combined results of GPR and concrete core testing
